Workshop: Woodblock Textile Printing

Create your very own wood or linocut blocks to print onto textiles

Learn how to design an image, and use cutting tools to carve this into a block. You can create an original design or be inspired by the illustrated examples provided.

Apply inks to blocks with rollers, ink pads, dabbers and brushes. Print blocks by hand, traditionally striking with wooden mallets, onto various materials, including calico, cotton, and linen.

Take inspiration from Worthing Museums’ decorative arts collection, costumes and fashion. Learn how block printing textiles have developed, and view images of ancient, mediaeval, Georgian, Arts and Crafts, and early 20th-century textile prints.
Starting with simple decorative motifs, learn about repeat patterns and introduce more colours will be possible.
