WPO: Symphonies and Serenades

Worthing Assembly Hall

Music by Sibelius, Britten and Tchaikovsky

Programme:

Sibelius: Symphony No. 3 in C major
Britten: Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor

The WPO begins its cycle of the symphonies of Jean Sibelius, projected over the next five seasons, with the taut classicism of the composer's Third Symphony. Tchaikovsky's tumultuous Fourth Symphony ends the programme, moving from fate-filled F minor to the unbuttoned Cossack dance of its final movement.
In between, Benjamin Britten's masterful settings of poems by six English poets provide, in effect, not one but many serenades.

Magnus Walker, Tenor
John Peskett, Horn
Dominic Grier, Conductor
