Magic, Mystery, and Smuggling, a guided walk around Highdown.

Highdown car park

Although only 266 feet high, Highdown Hill’s unique position on the Sussex coastal plain allows for views on its summit that stretch to the Isle of Wight in the west, to Beachy Head in the east. No wonder it was such an important place of ritual, defence, and burial to our ancient ancestors. To story of human occupation on Highdown can be traced back to the Bronze Age, taking in the Roman, Anglo-Saxon and more modern times, including the ‘Enigma of Highdown,’ John Olliver the eighteenth century miller and supposed smuggler, who is buried on the eastern slope.
