John Selden, the Defender of English Liberty

John Selden Public House

John Selden (1584 - 1654) was arguably, the most important historical figure to have ever lived in Worthing. Born in the modest cottage of 'Lacies' off Stone Lane, Salvington, Selden grew up to be a renowned expert of English law and history. He bravely defended his opinions against the tyranny of kings and nobles. As a Member of Parliament he spoke out in the interests of moderation and pragmatism and refused to support the trial and execution of King Charles I, despite having been imprisoned by Charles, and previously by his father, James I. There was far more to Selden though than law and politics, his wit and wisdom still speak to us across the centuries, and there is much we can learn from him today.
