Bell tower open at Heene

St Botolph's Church Bell Tower

The ringing chamber will be open for limited numbers of visitors to climb the spiral stairs and watch bellringing demonstrations. They can be assisted to ring a bell themselves depending on age and physical ability. Tower bell ringing will be explained and a model bell and frame is available to show how a bell is hung for change ringing. A Powerpoint video will explain change ringing further. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.
St Botolph’s, the parish church of Heene, was consecrated in 1873 and the bells hung in 1880. The heaviest bell is the tenor weighing 10 ¼ cwt. It is the only church in Worthing to have a ring of eight bells.
Please be aware that the spiral stairs are steep and there is no handrail. Seating is available in the ringing chamber. Call in any time between 11am-1pm.
