Sharkboy’s ‘Matinée at 30’ is an acoustic celebration of 30 years since the release of ‘Matinée’ the debut album.
Released to critical acclaim, Matinée launched Sharkboy on Nude Records, home of Suede and described as ‘singing torch songs to light up your life’.
Anticipating the rise of Americana and loungecore, Avy’s songs re-imagined the stories of Wim Wenders with shades of americana and Sonic Youth. She began drawing in musically accomplished Brighton jazz and horn section players and wrapped it all in a dark vintage glamour.
Avy has worked with David Baker of Mercury Rev, Robin Guthrie of The Cocteau Twins and Suede.
She also directs stop motion animation and her soundtrack-led ‘A New Life Tomorrow’ was recorded with sometime Sharkboy member Adrian Oxaal of James. It went on to win several awards in festival and is streamable on Discover Film. The film features in Sharkboy’s electric set - her projected work and soundscapes formed last year’s festival show, with songs and moving image from her pending album ‘BirdTown’. The acoustic ‘Matinée’ show will be no less arresting, in an intimate evening setting. Each show is a one-off, unique event with a special creative focus.
So bring your ears, sit back and enjoy a voice that has been likened to Hope Sandoval, PJ Harvey and Nico - with original songs from 'Matinée', perhaps a few new ones and even some less expected covers.
