Cissbury Ring: flint mines, a hillfort, and a medieval mint.

Cissbury Ring: flint mines, a hillfort, and a medieval mint.
It is rather amazing just how much of ancient Britain is represented at Cissbury Ring. There is the second largest assemblage of Neolithic flint mines in the country, and the second largest iron age hillfort (if indeed it was actually a fort). If that were not enough, the royal mint was moved to Cissbury in the late Anglo-Saxon period to protect it from Viking raids. In more recent times, a beacon to warn of the Armada invasion of 1588 was lit at Cissbury, and gun emplacements were erected here during the Second World War. This walk will also include local folklore connected with Cissbury, and pay homage to two leading conservationists who are commemorated here.
