I Know Where I’m Going is an exhibition of intricately cut collages made from painted paper by Daniela Maria Gargiulo, inspired by her journeys through the local landscape. In a series of new works made during the past year, Daniela documents her daily walks at dawn down suburban streets, twilight bike rides along the coastal path to Shoreham and Worthing, and trips by train further afield.
Daniela is fascinated by the continually changing light at Widewater Lagoon, the elemental drama of windswept wild grasses, the supernatural effect of street lights on mundane buildings, and by faded seaside grandeur. In works constructed with close attention to colour and detail, Daniela invites you to enter her environment and look more closely at our everyday world.
Daniela Maria Gargiulo is a British artist, born in the Black Country, now living and working in Lancing, West Sussex. A lifetime maker and crafter, she was taught to sew and embroider by her German mother. Daniela took a BTEC in Art and Design at Stourbridge College of Art in the 1980s, then studied BA Fashion/Textiles at Middlesex Polytechnic before going on to work in magazine publishing. Interested in avant-garde music, she became a director of London Musicians’ Collective, programming its epochal annual festival.
Moving to the South Coast twenty years ago, and following the birth of her daughter, she set up craft label and dressmaking blog Ivy Arch. She has spent years developing her colour sense and artistic sensibility, honing her skills and interest in fine arts and applied arts – studying art history, life drawing and mosaic making in evening classes, attending community arts day courses and working for Creative Waves Community Arts in Worthing.
At the age of 50, Daniela took Maggie Tredwell’s Painting and Drawing adult education course at Northbrook College. This provided the impetus for her to establish a daily practice and commit to making art on her own terms. Four years on, this is her second self-funded solo show. Daniela only exhibits once a year, so this is a rare opportunity to see her work and to meet the artist.
